Names of York: William and Hannah Penn

More in the ongoing series on the Names of York.

Places: William Penn High School and Hannah Penn Middle School in York, Pennsylvania

Who were they named after? William Penn and his second wife, Hannah.

Fun fact: You probably all know William as essentially the founder of our state and a former governor, but did you know Hannah handled affairs of state for her husband after illness incapacitated him? Hannah Penn was also the first and only female governor of Pennsylvania, succeeding her husband.
