Names of York: Samuel Small

More in the ongoing series on the Names of York.

Place: Small Athletic Field in York

Who was it named after? The property’s 19th-century owners were P.A. and Samuel Small. Samuel Small, in particular, was an 1800s merchant in the York area. Many members of the Small family were well-known, but Samuel was York’s leading 19th-century philanthropist and spearheaded construction of York’s first real hospital, a three-story, 12-bed building on College Avenue.

Something interesting: Small was no stranger to big projects. He sparked the York Collegiate Institute, forerunner of York College, the Children’s Home of York and the York Benevolent Association, among other community work.
