Ask Joan: Cousin Lee, fish market and Sunday buffet questions
What’s inside
1. Any information on Cousin Lee?
2. Recalling Fulton Fish Market
3. What was Sunday buffet restaurant?
1. Any information on Cousin Lee?
Many of you will recognize the name of Gary Ellsworth Heiland, a longtime reader and commenter. Gary wrote to me not too long ago with an interesting question:
“I was born in 1936 and named after a movie star and a local country singer on the radio. Gary came from Gary Cooper, and Ellsworth came from a local radio singer named Cousin Lee.”
He continued, “I’ve seen many a Gary Cooper movie, but I have never heard a song or anything else about Cousin Lee. The Lee part was a nickname for Ellsworth.”
I’d be very interested in hearing about Cousin Lee. Local musical stars are one of my favorite topics and this is not one I’d previously heard of.
2. Recalling Fulton Fish Market
Gary also had another question.
He wrote, “While I’m talking to you I would like to ask your readers if they remember the Fulton Fish Market building in downtown York. I remember stopping there with my dad. It was located on the intersection of two alleys. I remember it as a foreboding-looking building. There were pillars on the front of the building and I think it was built of brownstone-looking blocks. It faced west and the side facing another alley faced south. It might have been on the corner of South Howard and East Newton streets, though I don’t know that. The building was there into the late ’50s.”
I’d be interested in hearing more about this as well!
3. What was Sunday buffet restaurant?
This next question is a “short and sweet” one from Beth Scearce, who says she’s “trying to remember the name of motel/restaurant in East York around the 3900 block of East Market Street.” It was known for its Sunday buffet, she said.
All ideas are welcomed!

This response is for the third question (regarding a motel and buffet restaurant in East York).
The York Valley Inn was located at 3883 East Market Street and operated as a Quality Inn franchise. It closed in the early 1990’s and has since been demolished. The restaurant was called Sword and Shield.
