Ask Joan: Vermont week edition
Hubby and I are taking a special trip this week – my Christmas present was a getaway to Bennington, Vermont! After a hectic week and weekend last week, it’ll be nice to get away, but the preparations are keeping me busy! (Don’t worry, Only in York County will continue uninterrupted, though today’s Ask Joan material is some “quick questions” for which I’m hoping you’ll be willing to help me provide details.)
What’s inside
1. Finding organic local restaurant options
2. Where was the Slug’s Roost
3. Remembering “Tales from the Tomb”
1. My wife, Diana, and I recently started looking into eating a healthier diet, so we’ve been transitioning to eating organic foods. Are you aware of any nearby restaurants that offer an organic menu? Thanks!
– Justin Mann
Justin has been one of my great friends since high school and I’m hoping we can all help him out. He did go to Sonnewald’s to shop this week, which I told him was one of my recommendations. Restaurants, though, are another story. (I would suggest Wegmans in Mechanicsburg as a “restaurant” based on all its dine-in eating options, but I’m sure we can come up with something closer and perhaps a little more formal!)
Any suggestions?
2. Back in the 40s and 50s, there was a restaurant or bar called Slugs Roost in the York area. Could someone have any idea where it was located?
– Dave Utz, Red Lion
The only mention I could find of a Slug’s Roost was in this 1963 wedding announcement from the Lebanon Daily News, which talked about a wedding reception at Slug’s Roost in Camp Hill. Would there have been more than one? Hopefully, our readers can shed some light!
3. I am 64 years old and when I was 11 years old there was a local TV show called “Tales from the tomb,” I remember it was sponsored by Reinhart realty because I still remember the silly song that went with the show. I am curious as to who these characters were and any info you may have on this show.
– Malinda Snellbaker
I was actually NOT expecting to be able to find an answer to this, but happened upon this amazing website about horror TV show hosts. If you scroll down to “Leroy,” you’ll get a WEALTH of information about this show, including some details from Bob Andrews, now of Coatesville, who used to work at WHP-TV as a stage manager while in high school and had the opportunity to work with the show’s host, who went by “Leroy” on the program but who was actually Roy Bishop.
Bob says, “Many years have passed and I’m sure that all who participated (in the show) are either gone or retired. Live TV shows were the best because you never knew what would happen during them. I later became a film editor and news photographer at WHP.”
Malinda, I hope you’ll check out that link and also that anyone else with memories of “Tales from the Tomb” will share them. It sounds amazing, and I wish I could have seen it!
Got any questions? Ask Joan using the form at right. I’ll attempt to answer them in a future “Ask Joan” column on this blog. I get a large volume, but I will feature three each week and answer as many as possible!
