Ask Joan: Summer fun edition
Today’s Ask Joan questions all focus on fun summer things to do. We’re officially done our eighth-grade homeschooling year, having finished our evaluation and gotten our portfolio ready for the school district, so we’re in full-on summer mode!
What’s inside
1. Where is this mystery bell?
2. Looking for summer kids’ activities
1. Gene Rank formerly of the York area and a longtime Ask Joan reader, recently emailed me this photo taken during his travels. He wonders if anyone knows where it might be located, as he’d like to visit it while on vacation.
I’ve done a bunch of Google searches for things I think might be related, but to no avail. Any ideas to help solve this mystery?
2. Someone who’s known me for many, many years, Linda Massa, who is the school counselor at Dover Elementary School recently sent me a request for some information on summer activities available in our community for children? The school had been looking for a printable list of activities specifically for their elementary students (5 to 12 years old), and wondered if I could help.
While I didn’t have anything specifically printable, it did bring to mind a few resources about summer fun for the family that I want to be sure I share!
100 Days of Summer: This listing offers a generally family-friendly activity for each date. You can check that out on FlipSidePA.com here.
Search for Summer Camps: Use the bottom form to browse/search camps by date, topic, etc., in this feature on SmartMagPA.com.
York County Libraries Summer Reading Club: This is definitely a must-do for us each summer. We had a roundup of this year’s program, which is science-themed, on InYork.com, but you should also check out YorkLibraries.org for an even more detailed listing, including a way to sort events by age!
I told Linda that I wasn’t sure if those would help, but I’d keep her posted on anything else I found. I also thanked her – how great for the school to try to find such a resource for their students; I hope the families appreciate it!
Got any questions? Ask Joan using the form at right. I’ll attempt to answer them in a future “Ask Joan” column on this blog. I get a large volume, but I will feature three each week and answer as many as possible!
