Ask Joan: Meet Floyd and lots of mulch edition

Our home has had some changes this weekend. I spent most of Saturday laying down mulch from a truckload I’d had delivered from Whitecomb’s, and doing some other garden tasks.

Perhaps of bigger importance, though, is the addition of a new cat to our house. (That’s five cats, if you’re counting, plus the dog.) When I did my 2010 wrapup post, I mentioned I was averaging a “Meet my new cat” post about once a year. Scarily prescient of me, wasn’t it?

This is Floyd. He’s a sweet nine-year-old whose 84-year-old owner died. Floyd was kicked out of the home by the landlord after that, and through Rose, I found out he needed a home. (Yes, he’s sleeping on my husband’s legs. He curled up and started to purr like crazy!)

Clearly, everyone should be adopted by a cat.

What’s inside
1. Looking for Eastern yearbook
2. Shrewsbury follow-up
3. Seeking Sears hot dog info

1. Looking for 1970 yearbook from Eastern High School in Wrightsville. I live in Arizona. I can be contacted at nevrm9@inbox.com if someone knows where I can find one.
– Doug Day

Rather than write to me, if you have any ideas, please do contact Doug at the email address above. I’m sure he’d love to hear from anyone who can help! (For my part, I found that the school does maintain a “virtual yearbook” – really a listing of class members – which is here, obviously including Doug! Eastern also has a good alumni connections page here.)

2. Remember Dave, who wrote asking about a new building in the Shrewsbury area? Well, Dave wrote again. He was disappointed that the new business would be an auto shop. Why? Well, he says, not of that exact location but the area in general, “Shrewsbury (Main Street) could be revitalized with some better options. It’s a great place to walk and look at the shops but there’s no place to sit outside and get some lunch!”

Yes, lunch is definitely good! And any new businesses in any part of York County are certainly great, but I see where Dave is coming from, for sure!

Here, as of June 19, is a look at the site of the auto shop. Check out southernstablesautomotive.com for more about the business!

3. In (the June 12) paper, you mentioned Pappy’s and the hot dog stand at Sears in York County Shopping Center and you said for more info on the latter, go to your site and the archives. There doesn’t seem to be a way to search the archives other than to look in each folder. Can you send me the links to past columns that specifically mention the hot dog stand? My mother worked at Sears and we remember the stand, but can’t remember the name of the lady who ran it.
– Thad

Thad, that’s a good question! I don’t have all the links to specific posts about the hot dogs, but one thing I tend to do on most “series” on this blog is, from each post, you can usually find links to the previous one, and so on. The most recent on Sears hot dogs might have been this one. From there, just keep clicking the links inside the entry that reference previous posts, and from those posts, I tended to reference earlier ones.

Hope that helps – though I’m not sure I ever had the name of the woman who ran it! If you find out, I’d love to know!

Got any questions? Ask Joan using the form at right. I’ll attempt to answer them in a future “Ask Joan” column on this blog. I’m already getting a big volume, so it might take me a while, but I hope to be able to answer as many as possible!
