Ask Joan: Photos given, photos sought edition
Today’s Ask Joan is all about pictures – ones I’ve received and need help identifying, and ones other readers are looking for!
What’s inside
1. What is old building’s history?
2. Looking for Catholic school photo
3. Seeking photo of ESSO station
1. I have often wondered about the history of this old church in Lower Windsor Township near Lauxmount Farms. I have been unable to find anything on the internet. It has been used as a residence for years and is now abandoned. It was known as The Cat Lady’s house. Any info?
– Kathy Spagnola
Kathy shared with me a photo of the building (and of the nearby intersection), which you can see here:
My personal contention was that this was not a church, but rather a one-room schoolhouse, maybe Kline’s? (Which I knew to be in the area of Kline’s Run Road.)
So I reached out to Stephen H. Smith of YorksPast about this to see what he thought, as well; he’s documented MUCH of the county’s one-room school history!
From Stephen: “This is a picture of Kline’s One-Room Schoolhouse. More info on this school is in the ‘Photo Clippings Notebooks of York County One-Room Schools’ at York County History Center (974.841 Y61).”
He added, “A little further northwest on Trinity Church Road is where Trinity Church was located, on the corner of Trinity Church Road and Trinity North Road. Trinity Church no longer stands at this corner, there is now a modern house nearby; although Trinity Church Cemetery can still be seen next to this house.”
Many thanks to Stephen for being willing to confirm my thoughts and provide more details!
2. I would like to see a picture of the old Catholic high school from the 1940s or ’50s on King and West Streets.
– Dan Noble
Anyone have such a photo? Please feel free to email me at jconcilio@ydr.com; I’d love to share one!
3. My dad used to own the ESSO service station on E. Market St. in Stony Brook. I am trying to find photos of the building, any year, any date. He purchased the station in 1960 and sold it to my uncle, Ken Forry in 1989. I need early pictures when the building was covered with white porcelain panels with the big ESSO sign on the roof. Please ask your readers if they can help. … (My dad) has wanted a good photo of “the early days” for a long time.
– Bob Massimore
This is another one I’d love to be able to share! Does anyone have such a picture? Again, drop me an email!
Got any questions? Ask Joan using the form at right. I’ll attempt to answer them in a future “Ask Joan” column on this blog. I get a large volume, but I will feature three each week and answer as many as possible!
