Ask Joan: Birthday week edition
Tomorrow marks my 29th birthday! I’m really excited… only a year until 30. I expect a major celebration for my 30th. Unlike some who dread it, I feel like that’s when you’re really “someone,” if that makes sense. But for now, I’m going to enjoy 29!
What’s inside
1. Value of an old card
2. What’s that smell, part two
3. Drug Task Force auction location
1. (You blogged about) a 1944 Christmas card that features a U.S. soldier with two young children on his lap. How much is it worth?
– Carol Malec
It took me a little bit to realize that Carol was re referring to this post, which wasn’t something from my own collection but rather from loyal reader Jo Ott, who the post mentions is sharing her story.
I do not know any more about the card other than what is with that post. If you’re looking for a value, you might check with some of the local auction houses, which deal in local paper items of interest. I know Stermer’s Auction often sells local cards and postcards on consignment in large lots; if nothing else, maybe they could direct you to someone who could tell you what it might be worth?
Sorry I’m not more help! We share a lot of readers’ photos and old items, but we don’t really deal in any kind of pricing for them since they’re not our own!
2. Speaking of Jo Ott, she posed a good question when we talked about the smell of the paper mill in Spring Grove in this previous Ask Joan column.
She says, “There is however, even a worse smell … Near the Emigsville exit of I83 is the odor of what I deem to be raw sewerage and it is about as gross as anything can be. It is not always present but I encounter it in most of my trips down to York. Is there a sewage treatment plant in that area?”
My friend Justin Mann, in response to the same post about the Spring Grove smell, says “There actually seem to be a few different areas that smell bad, but few permeate the area like ‘Spring Grove’ (Glatfelter) right before it rains. One of the localized spots is Exit 22 on I-83 (N. Geo. St.). Yuck! I hold my breath when I drive past that spot. Gotta love it.” That’s the same spot, and my best guess is that it’s coming from the sewage-treatment plant up on Sherman Street Extended, past the new Central York High School. I have a friend who lives up past there, and I definitely do notice the smell when I’m close. I can’t say I’ve smelled it when getting off of I-83, though, so maybe that’s not close enough to be the cause of what Jo and Justin are smelling? Any other ideas?
3. There is an auction every year the day after Thanksgiving for seized vehicles in York, PA. Do you know the location of the auction?
– Antonia
I was able to get back to Antonia in time for her to get to the Nov. 25 auction, but I wanted to let everyone know so you can be prepared for the future.
These auctions are held by the York County Drug Task Force and take place on Black Friday and Memorial Day each year. They’re generally held at Schaad Detective Agency, 1114 Roosevelt Ave., York. Mark your calendars now for the next one; I hear they’re great for finding a new-to-you car!
Got any questions? Ask Joan using the form at right. I’ll attempt to answer them in a future “Ask Joan” column on this blog. I get a large volume, so it might take me a while, but I hope to be able to answer as many as possible!
