A blast from the past: York Ice Machinery Corp.

Eleven days before the Pearl Harbor bombing, a man named Glenn R. Gruver was calculating the area and volume of various items, possibly as a homework assignment.

Interestingly for readers of this blog, he was doing so on a piece of notepaper with the letterhead of “York Ice Machinery Corporation.”

You know that corporation, right? It was incorporated in 1895 as York Manufacturing Co., later became a division of Borg-Warner and then, most famously, was known as York International Corp., now owned by Johnson Controls. There’s some fun stuff about that company’s history – and specifically its role in the war that the U.S. would enter just days after Glenn Gruver’s math problems were completed – over on York Town Square.

Pretty neat, huh?
