Only in York County is 5 years old today!
Five years ago today, I made the first post on Only in York County. Just for fun, here’s a look at some “then-and-now” facts! (More post highlights can be found here.)
THEN | NOW |
Our daughter, Sarah, was 7 years old and had just finished the first grade. | Sarah is 12 and finished sixth grade as a homeschooler last month. |
The national average gas price was $3.052. | Try taking that up a bit – like 50 cents to a dollar. |
Most of my blog posts were about “Yorkisms,” with some profiles of local towns and a few “what it used to be” ideas thrown in for good measure. | That whole “what it used to be” idea really caught on, as did my looks into local food traditions. Yorkisms remain popular, though! |
My job at the YDR was to be the full-time Weekly Record editor, putting out four editions each week with a staff of two full-time copy editors. | My job at the YDR is part-time (allowing me to homeschooling Sarah) as the online editor with a staff of one part-time librarian; this blog and the two accompanying print columns, “Do you remember?” and “Ask Joan” are part of that. |
I had 3 cats: Scoop, Huggles (who arrived in my first week of blogging here) and Salem. | I have 5 cats: Still Huggles and Salem, and also Mr. Bill, Mitts and Floyd. Scoop has gone to Kitty Heaven. |
The York Fair’s musical acts were Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins, Bill Engvall, Daughtry and Randy Owen (from Alabama). (Search for Fair acts by year here. | Confirmed acts for this year’s Fair include Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, REO Speedwagon, Jeff Dunham and Allstar Weekend. |
We published the first installments of our one-room schoolhouse memories series (which would later become a hardcover book) in the Weekly Record. | We’re STILL receiving schoolhouse memories – I got one in the past two weeks! |
I loved living in York County. | I love living in York County! |
