York CWRT meeting features the always entertaining Dr. Charlie Fennell !
Charlie Fennell poses by a monument on Culp’s Hill at Gettysburg National Military Park. A professor at Harrisburg Area Community College in Gettysburg, Dr. Fennell is a recognized expert on the Battle of Gettysburg.
One of the most entertaining public speakers and educators in this general area will be the featured speaker at the August 18, 2010 monthly meeting of the York Civil War Round Table in historic York, Pennsylvania. Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide, Dr. Charles C. Fennell, Jr., will present what promises to be a great presentation, ” Fighting or Flying Dutchmen: The 11th Corps from Barlow’s Knoll to Cemetery Hill.”
The understanding that most visitors to the battlefield at Gettysburg have of the performance of the 11th corps is that they came, they saw, they ran. Is this a fair evaluation of the much-maligned 11th corps ? Are the derisive names of Howard’s Cowards and the Flying Dutchmen justified ? This program will critically detail the fighting (or lack thereof) of the 11th corps on July 1st, beginning with the decision of Francis Barlow to move his men forward and then their subsequent retreat back through the town of Gettysburg to Cemetery Hill.
Dr. Fennell will lead a battle walk / field study on the same topic at Gettysburg National Military Park on September 18, 2010 at 1:00 PM. Tour begins at Barlow’s Knoll and ends at Cemetery Hill. Cost is $ 10.00 per person. More details to follow at future posting.
The meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening, August 18th, in the auditorium of the York County Heritage Trust, Historical Society Museum & Library, 250 E. Market St. in downtown York, Pennsylvania. Information: 717- 848-1587, ext. 223.
