Tracing your York County Civil War soldier ancestor!
Author Dennis W. Brandt has spent years researching the personal histories and military records of thousands of Civil War soldiers from York and Adams counties in south-central Pennsylvania. He has studied pension applications, vital records, enlistment papers, service records, and other primary sources. Dennis graciously has shared the results of this painstaking research with the public through the website of the York County Heritage Trust.
Here is a step-by-step guide to using this incredible database, which has thousands of entries.
Here is a screen shot of the appropriate page on the YCHT website.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and type in the name of the soldier you are researching. For example, I typed in the surname Glatfelter, which is a popular name in southern York County.
Within seconds, the powerful search engined on the YCHT site scans through the thousands of entries and does a keyword search for “Glatfelter.” It returned 20 matches, in alphabetical order.
That’s all there is to it! Simple, fast, and very powerful, this tool is very useful to research information about ancestors or other soldiers of interest. I take photos of Civil War graves here in York County and have used Dennis’s database dozens of times to collect information about the soldiers named on the headstones.
There is no charge to use the database. YCHT has graciously provided access for free as a service to the community.
