The Complete Book of the US Presidents
Bill Venne, a prolific author with more than 36 history books to his credit, has been a frequent expert on TV programs on the History Channel, National Geographic Channel, and the Smithsonian Channel. He has been praised in the Wall Street Journal and in other outlets for his vivid writing style.
His most recent book is among his most interesting titles. Zenith Press has recently published Venne’s The Complete Book of US Presidents, a lavishly illustrated, 255-page “coffee table” book that is a wonderful general overview of each president, the key events of his administration, his opponents in the elections, vice presidents, first ladies, and much more useful information.
Each president gets his own section in the book, fronted with a full-color painting, illustration, or photograph. The text includes a well written, multi-page concise overview of the president’s entire life, with separate call-out side bars on the first lady (if any) and vice president (if any).
For example, here are two of the pages on Theodore Roosevelt covering his years with the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War.
Some of the material on Grover Cleveland, including the sidebars on his wife Frances Folsom Cleveland and his vice president, Adlai E. Stevenson.
Overall, this book is high quality, with an outstanding selection of illustrations that nicely complement the fine summaries of the presidents’ lives. It should be a essential reference for anyone, particularly youth, who want to better understand the sequence of presidents, their major decision points and results, and national and international events of significance that happened during their respective administrations. Highly recommended!
