Stories, letters, diaries, journals wanted for More Civil War Voices from York County, Pa.
I have begun writing More Civil War Voices from York County, Pa.: Remembering the Rebellion and the Gettysburg Campaign, which we hope to have in print for the 150th anniversary of the Confederate occupation of York County in June 2013. I have assembled enough material early on in this effort to fill almost 40 pages, with lots more to be compiled and edited.
Here’s where you can help!
Co-author Jim McClure and I are seeking photocopies of your ancestors’ old Civil War letters, dairies, journal entries, newspaper clippings, and oral reminiscences passed down through the generations. We received so much good material for the first volume, but we remain convinced there is much more still out there to be discovered. If you have any material you think would be of interest (including photographs and sketches!), please don’t hesitate to send me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
By the way, for those of you interested in a walking tour of York’s downtown Civil War heritage, I am leading a 2.5-hour tour this Saturday, September 6, 2011, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Meet at the northeast corner of Center Square (intersection of Market and George streets). The cost is only $12, payable to Downtown Inc. Come on out, get some exercise and fresh air, and learn a little more about York’s storied history.
