87th PA Living Historians Release 2020 Schedule of Events

Members of the 87th Pennsylvania reenactors group portray period Union soldiers. (submitted)

The 87th Pennsylvania was the most famous regiment from York County during the American Civil War. its ranks included a few companies from neighboring Adams County but most of the officers and men were local to this county. The 87th first saw action at the Second Battle of Winchester in the summer of 1863 during the Gettysburg Campaign when many of their men fell prisoner after the disaster at Carter’s Woods (read all about it here). After regrouping and bolstering their ranks with fresh recruits, the 87th battled the Confederates at Monocacy in 1864 near Frederick, Maryland. They spent considerable time in Northern Virginia, seeing action in the Overland Campaign, the Siege of Petersburg, and other engagements.

Company C, 87th Pennsylvania is a local living history organization with a proud tradition of honoring the memories of the long-ago 87th through battlefield history camps and presentations, parades, memorial services at veterans’ graves, and other events. Have you ever wanted to be a Civil War reenactor or living historian?
