Franklin Township churches celebrate Heritage Day; Civil War fife and drum group to play

Heritage Day will be celebrated October 18th at St. John’s Franklin Lutheran Church for the community and the three churches comprising Faith United Lutheran Parish near Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. The public is welcome to this celebration.
Among those groups participating in the historic traditional worship service at 10:30 AM will be members of the 11th Pa. Volunteer Fife and Drum Corps from Gettysburg, members of the 42nd Pa. “Bucktails,” and others visiting in the Dillsburg area this weekend.
In tribute to early members who continued their native language service into the latter 19th century, a portion of the readings will be in German.
About 11:30 attendees will gather at the grave sites of several Civil War soldiers for a short memorial service.

Afterward, about noon, everyone is invited to participate in a heritage meal in the church social room for a time of fellowship. A covered dish food item would be welcomed; perhaps one depicting your heritage or tradition, or something you remember from a past “covered dish” community meal. Labeling its history and/or providing the recipe would add to the theme. Any memorabilia of Franklin, Emmanuel, and Barrens Churches you wish to share would also be appropriate.
Everyone is invited. You may come for any or all portions of this Heritage Day event where any vintage attire is welcomed.
St. John’s was established in the 18th century as a Union Church with German Lutheran and Reformed congregations. The earliest recorded grave in the churchyard is said to be 1766. Today the church is one of three Lutheran congregations forming Faith United Lutheran Parish, each worshiping weekly in its own church building. Roy H. Stetler IV and Naomi Sease Carriker are the parish pastors.
St. John’s is located 3 miles south of Dillsburg, east of U.S. Route 15, at Franklin Church and Clearview Roads, in Franklin Township.
