Dr. Charles C. Fennell, Jr. Returns to York CWRT

A long-time friend of the York Civil War Round Table, Dr. Charles C. Fennell, Jr., will present a talk at the upcoming CWRT meeting on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at 7 p.m. The presentation topic of the evening will be “Clash of Sabers at East Cavalry Field.”

This program will give an overview of the July 3 battle between J.E.B. Stuart’s and David Gregg’s cavalry divisions in what became known as the East Cavalry Field. This fight, three miles from the main battlefield, also includes the troopers of George Custer’s Brigade of Michigan cavalry. This fight was one of the largest cavalry actions of the Civil War and one of the most intense. The field looks much like it did in 1863 and the field program will walk some of these fields while looking at the reasons for the clash and the final results.

A battlefield walk and field study at Gettysburg National Military Park with Dr. Fennell is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2013, at 12:30 p.m. The walk will be approximately 2 hours and the cost is $10.00 due on the day of the walk.

Dr. Charles C. Fennell, Jr. is currently on the staff at the Gettysburg campus of the Harrisburg Area Community College. Dr. Fennell has been a Licensed Battlefield Guide at GNMP since 1986. He is one of the recognized experts on the Culp’s Hill portion of the Gettysburg Battlefield. He received his Ph.D. from West Virginia University. The meeting will be held at the Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market St. in downtown York, Pennsylvania. The presentation is free and open to the public. Parking is also free. Bring a friend!
